How To Store Your Cleaning Supplies

A clean, organized home starts with easy access to your cleaning supplies. Storing them properly will help keep them in good condition and ready to use when needed.

Here are some tips for effective cleaning supply storage.

Store Liquids Upright

Nobody likes a sticky, leaky bottle of cleaner. Bottles of dish soap, multi-surface cleaners, bleach and more should be wiped after use and stored upright to prevent the liquid from leaking into the cap over time.

Rotate Your Supply

Check expiration dates and use older products first to avoid wasting cleaning solutions that have gone past their prime. Limiting the number of products you have by opting for multi-surface and all-purpose cleaners will help keep you from wasting products.

Organize by Type

Birds of a feather flock together. Group products together based on what and how they’re used. For example, laundry detergent and supplies should have their designated space while all-purpose cleaners are in another. Keep cleaning pads, scrub brushes and other tools together as well. This makes it easier to find what you need faster.

Store Aerosols Securely

If you use aerosol cleaners, make sure to secure them in a plastic storage bin to prevent accidental discharge or a fall that could cause broken caps and nozzles. You should also consider opting out of aerosols altogether, as they are harmful to your indoor air quality and the environment.

Keep Cleaning Pads and Sponges Clean

Store used microfiber cloths, cleaning pads and sponges in a lidded bin until you can wash them. This prevents unwanted odors from lingering on textiles you use regularly. Wash them in a separate load from other textiles and return them to their rightful home in your cleaning supply storage closet.

Make It Safe

Always remember to keep your cleaning supplies out of reach of pets and children, even if they’re labeled safe. Store all-purpose cleaners, disinfectants, and other chemical products in high or locked cabinets to prevent accidental poisonings. If you transfer chemicals into smaller bottles for convenience, always label them clearly to avoid mistakes and improper use.
