How a Clean Workplace Boosts Productivity
How important is it to maintain a clean workplace? In fact, clean environments aren’t just beneficial for impressing guests. Studies have shown what we inherently know to be true: that clean rooms make us more productive. Here’s how.
Less Stress
It may be a mystery as to exactly why, but countless studies affirm the self-evident truth that humans are happier in clean spaces. Disorganization in our environment causes stress. Everyone already knows this from personal experience, but several studies confirm that there is science behind our feelings. Research shows clutter is linked to higher levels of cortisol, your body’s main stress hormone.
More Active
A surprising study from the University of Indiana in the early 2000s showed that people with clean homes experience more physical activity. It’s unclear whether the increase in activity comes from doing the chores themselves or if people with clean homes are more likely to get their bodies moving, but there is definitely a notable link. It stands to reason that people in clean environments have less stress and more energy and motivation to get moving.
Increased Focus
A 2011 Princeton University study showed that a cluttered environment results in decreased focus. According to the study, “Multiple stimuli present in the visual field at the same time compete for neural representation by mutually suppressing their evoked activity throughout the visual cortex, providing a neural correlate for the limited processing capacity of the visual system.” A slightly reductive explanation of that point is this: while you’re looking at disorganization, your brain practices ignoring it. However, your brain doesn’t distinguish exactly what it should and should not ignore. It just in general does less processing overall, so it doesn’t have to constantly keep thinking about that clutter. Lower processing means less ability to focus.
Less Sick Time
You’re less productive when you’ve got a cold, especially if you or your employee has to take a sick day. Unfortunately, there are a lot of bacteria on your keyboard right now. While most of it may be harmless, you can decrease your chances of catching a common virus by keeping your workspace sanitized. Additionally, a dusty workspace can cause uncomfortable symptoms like an itchy throat or runny nose.
